The City of Gwangju is currently making efforts to become Korea's cultural capital and Asia's cultural hub, pushing forward with the construction of the Asia Cultural Center and the key task projects. It is indeed a tremendous honor and pleasure for the City of Gwangju to host the Preliminary Asia Culture Forum as a part of the key task projects and I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you. First, my special thanks must go to those of you at the Gwangju Culture & Art Promotion Committee for your unsparing efforts and hard work in organizing this very significant event. At the same time, I would like to give a warm-hearted welcome to the presenters and panelists who will share with us their insightful views for a well-advised cultural development and dynamic exchanges in Asia. I believe that this forum will be a very meaningful occasion for exploring ways to promote vibrant interchange of arts and culture and to build a constructive civil society network in the Asian region. Most importantly, I am confident that this forum will greatly contribute to reaffirming the value of Asia's culture and discovering the Asian identity through the in-depth dialogue among the experts from the arts and culture communities. I hope that the forum will provide an opportunity for countries with diverse histories and cultures to share their experience and knowledge, which will lay the groundwork for the collective development of arts and culture in Asia. As you are aware, the City of Gwangju is exerting its utmost to become the cultural capital of Korea and the cultural hub of Asia so that Gwangju's exceptionally splendid arts and cultural assets can galvanize cultural creativity. We are making an all-out effort to host the 2011 Universal Forum of Cultures, while building the Asia Culture Center, decidedly the core project of the cultural hub initiative, and the cultural cluster which will spearhead the culture that will lead the cultural industry.
